within the GreenRobust Cluster of Excellence (f/m/d, E13 TV-L, 65%)
Application Deadline: 30.11 2026 or until position is filled.
Within the GreenRobust Cluster of Excellence, a PhD position in molecular crop physiology shared between the group of Uwe Ludewig (University of Hohenheim) and Mark Stahl (University Tübingen) is available for the fixed term of three years starting on January 01st 2027.
Research
In a long term field trial at the University of Hohenheim effects of weather and weather extremes (complex abiotic stress combinations) on yield and yield stability are investigated. Firstly, long term weather data are used to identify major drivers in the system. Secondly, in sensitive phases and during and after weather extremes plant samples are taken and analytically analyzed at molecular and cellular level. You will identify major molecular and mechanistic targets of weather extremes and their relation to fertilization on yield. Crops will also be grown on similar extreme weather conditions of abiotic stress combinations (not single stress) in the greenhouse, to estimate whether these extremes in the field are well represented in greenhouse trials.
Your tasks
- Computational analysis of existing long term weather and crop growth data with respect to extreme events and relating these to yield. Various statistical methods and analyses.
- Supervising and conducting greenhouse and field experiments.
- Transcriptomic (incl. single cell) analysis at sensitive timepoints from field samples.
- Analysis of growth parameters, nutrient/ metabolite / gene expression. Integration of multi-omics datasets with statistical methods.
- Participation in project meetings and presentations at national and international conferences.
- Final drafting of project reports and scientific publications based on the research findings.
Your profile
- University degree (Master’s or Diploma) in biology, plant sciences, agricultural sciences or a comparable field
- A general interest in agronomy / plant physiology and statistics.
- Experience with greenhouse or field experiments, laboratory experience in molecular methods or analytical chemistry
- Independent and thorough teamwork ability.
- Good English and German skills (oral and written).
Working environment
The successful candidate will join the research group of Nutritional Physiology at the University of Hohenheim. The project is part of the GreenRobust Cluster of Excellence and therefore provides access to this interdisciplinary research network.
As a university with a distinct profile, the University of Hohenheim brings together the Faculties of Agricultural Sciences, Natural Sciences, and Business, Economics and Social Sciences. Our green campus with everything at close quarters promotes collaboration and creates an inspiring environment for research, teaching, and work. With us, aspiring minds find a community in which they can grow and develop. Shape a sustainable future with us!
